¿What is a green space?
A green space or green area is a terrain occupied by plants, shrubs, or trees whose uses can vary. From ecological, recreational, rehabilitation, decorative spaces to protective ones such as forests, parks, or gardens. When talking about urban green spaces, it refers to those within a city. That is, fundamental public spaces to promote sustainable development.
Why are green spaces needed in cities?
88% of urban area residents are exposed to high levels of pollution, causing more than 200,000 premature deaths in the European Union in 2020. This, together with the speed of the urbanization process and demographic changes, leads to two of the main challenges we face today: non-communicable diseases and climate change.
Ensuring these green areas in cities contributes to fulfilling Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11.7 “provide universal access to safe, inclusive, and accessible green and public spaces,” and more and more epidemiological studies demonstrate their benefits.
