PROJECT

Galicia Forest

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Reforestation project in deforested areas, promoting the development of a stable and sustainable ecosystem.

Project for the afforestation of treeless areas, promoting the development of a stable and sustainable ecosystem. Galicia Forest, which integrates the projects Galicia Forest I and Galicia Forest II, is an ambitious reforestation project covering a total of 154.08 hectares. This extensive area is located in the Community of Montes Vecinales en Mano Común de Couso, in the Concello de Avión, located in the province of Ourense, Galicia. The main objective of this project is the ecological restoration of the area. Through this action, the aim is to mitigate the effects of climate change by capturing and storing carbon.

The implementation of this reforestation project in the Galicia Forest will play a crucial role in soil protection. One of the main advantages is the reduction of the risk of erosion, a common problem in degraded forest areas. In addition, the new forest stand will contribute to the regulation of water resources, improving soil infiltration conditions and promoting a more balanced hydrological cycle. This not only helps to minimise water erosion, but also provides essential nutrients to the soil, benefiting plants and organisms in the ecosystem.

The Galicia Forest also stands out for its ability to promote biodiversity. Reforestation will encourage the colonisation of the area by a large number of native species of flora and fauna. This enrichment of biodiversity is vital for maintaining a healthy and resilient environment, able to adapt to environmental changes and better withstand ecological challenges.

A distinctive feature of the Bosque Galicia project is the mix of species used in the reforestation. The introduction of a variety of species breaks the horizontal canopy continuity. This continuity is typical of monospecific plantations that favour the spread of forest fires. By creating a more diverse and resilient vegetation, the likelihood of uncontrolled fire spread is reduced. This improves the safety and sustainability of the forest.

Conclusion

Galicia Forest is not only a reforestation project, but also a comprehensive initiative for ecological restoration and long-term sustainability. By contributing to carbon sequestration and biodiversity enrichment, the project plays an essential role in combating climate change and improving the environmental health of the region. This holistic and scientific approach ensures that the benefits of Bosque Galicia will endure, providing a sustainable model of forest management for Galicia and beyond.
