The Covas Reforestation Project covers 5.77 hectares located in the Community of Montes Vecinales en Mano Común de Covas, in the municipality of Cerdedo-Cotobade, Pontevedra (Galicia). Its main goal is to establish a robust forest stand that provides a wide range of vital ecosystem services for the region.
The Covas Project aims to guarantee the supply of raw materials, which is fundamental for local economic sustainability. The new forest stand will play a crucial role in regulating the water cycle, and in protecting the soil against erosion. In addition, it focuses on the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, contributing significantly to climate change mitigation. The expected rich biodiversity of plant and animal species will promote a healthy and balanced environment.
The main species selected for this project is Pinus radiata, known for its rapid growth and adaptation to the climatic conditions of the region. The strategic choice of this species is due to its ability to rapidly accumulate organic matter and nutrients in the soil, which favours the regeneration of the forest ecosystem. Pinus radiata not only provides sustainable timber, but also improves soil structure and contributes to biodiversity. In addition, the project includes a perimeter strip of native hardwoods. This band plays a crucial role as a natural barrier against fires, a recurrent problem in the region.
The Covas Reforestation Project stands out for its integrated approach to forest management that combines environmental, economic and social objectives.
