PROJECT

Ibercaja Foundation Forest – Tauste

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Create a forest ecosystem capable of absorbing CO2, thereby combating global warming, protecting the soil by creating a sustainable forest cover, and restoring the area's biodiversity and wildlife habitats.

This reforestation project, promoted by the Ibercaja Foundation Forest, covers an area of 39.68 hectares in the municipality of Tauste, located in the province of Zaragoza (Aragon).

The main objective of the Ibercaja Foundation Forest is to promote the establishment of a forest mass in an area devoid of vegetation and degraded by intense erosive processes. This initiative is essential for the regulation of water resources, helping to minimise the risks associated with erosion processes and improving soil quality by providing nutrients. The implementation of this project represents a considerable environmental challenge, as it seeks to transform a degraded area into a robust and sustainable forest ecosystem.

It is a multi-species plantation, consisting of native conifers and broadleaved trees adapted to the seasonal conditions of the region and capable of occupying different vegetation strata in the future. This approach ensures that the species planted can occupy different vegetation strata in the future, promoting a complex and biodiverse forest structure. The selection of species has been carefully planned to promote the adaptation, diversity and resilience of the forest stand to possible environmental disturbances.

Among the species selected for this plantation are Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) and oak (Quercus spp.). Both species are known for their ability to adapt to degraded land and their contribution to the stability of the ecosystem.

Due to the special conservation characteristics of the reforestation, as well as the specific difficulties of the site, continuous monitoring is required. After planting, we proceed to replanting to ensure that the target density is maintained.
