The Reforestation Project in Quireza spans 19.43 hectares located in the Community of Montes Vecinales en Mano Común de Quireza, located in the municipality of Cerdedo-Cotobade, in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia. This project is focused on the comprehensive restoration of this degraded area, with the primary goal of establishing a new forest mass that not only supports biodiversity conservation but also promotes sustainability and resilience in the region’s ecosystems.
In addition to mitigating the effects of climate change through carbon sequestration, the project positively impacts the local economy. The creation of this forest brings ecosystem benefits such as soil protection and water cycle regulation, while also fostering local biodiversity.
Pinus radiata, a fast-growing conifer well-suited to the region, is the main species selected for reforestation. A perimeter strip of native hardwoods has also been introduced, serving as a natural firebreak by disrupting the forest’s horizontal continuity and reducing the risk of fire spread. This combination enriches the ecosystem and enhances environmental resilience.
The Quireza project showcases a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and economic growth in Galicia. By aligning ecological, economic, and social benefits, it exemplifies responsible forest management, helping the ecosystem adapt to the challenges of climate change and human activity.
