PROJECT

Posidonia Pilot

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Regeneration of seagrasses as a sustainable solution to climate change that respects the marine ecosystem and generates biodiversity.

Our ocean grassland regeneration project is designed to offer an innovative and sustainable solution for the care of the environment and people’s health. We focus on Posidonia regeneration, using both vegetative fragments and seeds, applying scientific knowledge and previous experience to optimise seedling survival and growth under controlled conditions.

The first pilot test has been carried out in collaboration with Sanitas through the Eco-disruptive initiative. This initiative consisted of the implantation of a 1 square metre biodegradable sod, made up of 36 Posidonia seedlings, in the Mediterranean Sea, specifically in the Port of Torredembarra.

Our project faces significant challenges, such as working on large surfaces and reducing implementation costs. To address these difficulties, we are exploring innovative solutions and collaborating closely with experts in the field. We seek to maximise the impact of our initiative by developing efficient and sustainable techniques that can be replicated on a larger scale.

Regeneration of seagrass meadows not only has the potential to restore key marine habitats, but also promotes biodiversity and improves water quality. In addition, Posidonia meadows play a crucial role in protecting the coast from erosion and in sequestering carbon, thus contributing to climate change mitigation.

In summary, our commitment to innovation and sustainability in the Posidonia regeneration project reflects our aim to lead initiatives that promote a healthier and more resilient marine future. We are dedicated to advancing science and technology to protect and restore these valuable marine ecosystems for future generations.
