PROJECT

Loureiro

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Recovery of a degraded forest mass following a fire, aimed at reestablishing native vegetation, restoring the functionality of both the soil and the canopy, and possessing the ability to absorb CO from the atmosphere, thereby mitigating the effects of climate change.

The Loureiro project focuses on the reforestation of 10.57 hectares located in the Community of Montes Vecinales en Mano Común de Loureiro, in the municipality of Cerdedo-Cotobade, Pontevedra (Galicia). The main objective of this project is the ecological restoration of a forest mass that has been devastated by fires and has not been able to recover on its own. In doing so, it seeks to contribute to the mitigation of the effects of climate change by creating a sustainable and biodiverse ecosystem in the long term.

The future forest stand will play a crucial role in soil protection. One of the main advantages will be the minimisation of the risk of erosion, a common problem in areas affected by fires. In addition, the new vegetation will improve soil infiltration and balance the hydrological cycle. These benefits not only help to minimise water erosion, but also provide essential nutrients to the soil, benefiting plants and organisms in the ecosystem.

The species selected for the reforestation are typical of the Atlantic forests present in Galicia. They include Pinus pinaster subsp. atlantica, Quercus robur and Castanea sativa. These species are known for their ability to adapt to local conditions and for their ecological importance in the region.

In short, the Loureiro project not only addresses the restoration of a burned forest, but also promotes sustainability and biodiversity. By selecting native and adapted species, the creation of a robust and balanced ecosystem is ensured. This comprehensive approach not only helps mitigate climate change, but also improves the environmental health and resilience of the region in the long term.
