PROJECT

Galicia Forest II

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This reforestation project will guarantee sustainable wood production and will help counteract the effects of climate change by removing CO2 from the atmosphere. The species used was Pseudotsuga menziesii, fast growing and adapted to the region.

Located in the Community of Montes Vecinales en Mano Común de Couso, within the Concello de Avión in Ourense, Galicia. The Galicia Forest II Project covers an area of 55.19 hectares dedicated to reforestation. This initiative ensures the sustainable production of wood to meet industrial demand while also delivering significant environmental and social benefits. It plays a critical role in the ecological restoration of the region, addressing both current and future environmental challenges.

The main objective of the Galicia Forest II Project is to facilitate the restoration of degraded areas and help counteract the effects of climate change by removing CO2 from the atmosphere. By using Pseudotsuga menziesii, commonly known as Douglas fir, the establishment of a robust and sustainable forest stand is ensured. It is a fast-growing species and perfectly adapted to the climatic conditions of Galicia. The introduction of Douglas fir favours the recovery of local biodiversity, providing a suitable habitat for a variety of native species of flora and fauna.

This project not only stabilises the soil, preventing erosion, but also contributes to the regulation of the hydrological cycle. This new ecosystem not only enriches regional biodiversity, but also strengthens the resilience of the natural environment to potential environmental challenges.
